Weekly Updates - Week Beginning 21st November 2022

Mrs Wolfe - 18 Nov 2022

Children in Need – 18th November
It has been amazing to see the children come into school wearing their Pudsey outfits and spotty clothes today.  The councillors have done a fantastic job organising today’s events and we look forward to seeing how much we have raised for this fantastic cause.  Next week our school councillors will be counting all the donations and money received from today and announcing the winners of the lunchtime Pudsey games.  We will let you know how much we have raised on next week’s weekly update! Thank you for all your support – it has been a truly ‘spotacular’ day!

Patronal Festival – 26th November
Our songs for the Patronal Festival just keep sounding better and better!  If your child is able to join us and sing at the festival please complete the return/send message sent from Mrs Pawson via the website, thank you.  This way we will have a good idea of numbers.  Please note, any child attending must be accompanied by an adult.

We will be singing at the Patronal Festival on 26th November 2022 at 10:30am, which will be held this year in the Mechanics Institute.  We really hope that our children will come along and sing at the festival and that families can join us for this great community event.  If children wish to attend they must be accompanied by an adult and wear their school jumper.  We look forward to seeing you there.

Forest School
Oak Class Forest School sessions will continue until Christmas. Children should wear old, comfortable clothes and wellies or trainers for this along with waterproof trousers and coats.  Please send the children's school uniform with them in a bag, to change into after their session, thank you.

Reading For Pleasure
Please keep encouraging the children to read for pleasure at home – it is having such an impact on our children, in so many wonderful ways!  Once this is recorded in your child’s reading record this counts towards their next star on our ‘Reading Galaxy’.  As a reminder, children receive a star for every 4 or more reads they complete each week.  It was great to see so many children purchasing books at our Children in Need Book and Toy Sale this affternoon - we hope they enjoy their new reads!

Swimming
Swimming Lessons continue for Palm Class this half term
Children will need:
  • Swim cap (These can be bought from the swimming baths, please send £1.00 in an envelope labelled with your child’s name)
  • One-piece costume for girls and shorts for boys (no baggy board shorts please).
  • Towel
  • Goggles (optional)
  • Long hair tied up
Scheme Reading Books
Just a reminder that Little Wandle reading books need to be returned each week.  If you are unsure of the day, this will be in your child’s reading record.  It is crucial that these books are returned on time to enable all of our children on the Little Wandle scheme to access the books they need.  Thank you for your support with this – it really is important.

Message from Friends
We are excited to welcome Jo Hallam as the Reception Friends representative. We would love to have someone to be the Oak Class representative, if you could help out and be the Friends contact that would be great. Please contact me (Anne Watt) if you are interested on annewatt905@yahoo.com

Curries are back too, we will be having a ‘Pop Up Curry’ on the 1st and 2nd of December. We are also planning a Christmas Raffle and Bags2school. All the money raised is given to school to help support all the children.

Thanks for your support from Friends

Health & Safety Updates

Knotweed
Thank you for staying clear of the pebbled area that runs alongside the main school building between the bandstand and the black gate leading into the playground.  This area has a recurring knotweed issue and we therefore kindly ask that you use the pathway only and do not walk on this area.  Please prevent children from running/playing on this area – knotweed is a very invasive plant and spreads rapidly.  Our garden maintenance team repeatedly treat this problem for us.

Scooters & Bicycles
Thank you for your support regarding bikes and scooters on the playground.  Additional clarification was sent out to parents at the beginning of the week.  As a reminder, we kindly request that children dismount their vehicles on arrival to the school grounds.  Children attending pre-school must be accompanied by an adult if on the school grounds with a bike/scooter.  Please be assured that we actively encourage children to ride their bikes and scooters to school.

Safeguarding, Mental health and Wellbeing Updates

Anti-Bullying Week
The children have spent time this week thinking about bullying, how to recognise it and how to stop it.  This year's theme has been 'Reach Out' and has focused on reaching out and knowing who to go to for help.  The children made links to their recent NSPCC learning on 'Speak Out, Stay Safe'.  We have been very impressed with their mature thinking, as well as their kind and caring attitudes.

This May Help...
This May Help has been created to support parents and carers with concerns about their child’s mental health. Click here to access the website: https://thismayhelp.me/
The subjects covered on this website have been chosen by families and young people who have gone through their own mental health challenges. What helped them may also help you. The films offer advice across six main subject areas, with ten additional films offering supporting information. The films can be viewed in any order at any time. Each film has a dedicated page where you’ll also find helpful advice and links to other resources.
