Let’s Celebrate!

Can you help us to celebrate our local harvest?
As part of our Harvest Celebration, we would love to invite parents, farmers, allotment holders, gardeners, contractors, and anyone involved in bringing in our local harvest to join us. We would be delighted if you could come and share your experiences, helping our children to learn more about the work that goes into producing the food and resources that we all rely on every day. Together, we will give thanks for the harvest and develop a deeper appreciation of the harvest that happens all around us.
If this is something that you can help us with as a family or an individual or if you know anyone locally who might like to help us then please get in touch with Gemma Pawson (Acorn Class Teacher) gpawson@kirkbymalzeard.n-yorks.sch.uk

Spotlights from Learning…

Acorn Class
Acorn Class have had another fantastic week of learning!  We have been busy becoming confident mathematicians in Mastering Number, developing our understanding of numbers through counting, subitising and exploring number patterns. Reception have been fascinated by the question, "Why were jellyfish created?" We think jellyfish are magical and amazing creatures! We discovered that jellyfish have been on Earth for over 500 million years and they have no bones at all! Our PE lessons have been full of energy and teamwork. We enjoyed playing Lions and Hyenas and Bears in the Woods, practising our listening skills, agility, speed and cooperation while having lots of fun outdoors. As part of our learning about the Christian worldview of Creation, Year 1 have loved becoming 'creators' themselves. Each day we have explored a different part of the Christian Creation story and created our own wonderful artwork. So far, we have created light, sea and sky, land and plants, the sun and moon, and birds and fish. We still have a little more creating to do before we enjoy a well-earned rest, just as Christian's believe God did on the seventh day! We are incredibly proud of all the creativity, curiosity and enthusiasm that Acorn Class have shown this week. Well done, everyone!

Oak Class
Oak Class have been working incredibly hard this week, especially in Geography! We have started our new topic - The Seaside. We have learnt about the coastline around the United Kingdom and marked these on our own maps to show the boundary where the land stops and the sea starts. We loved exploring hidden miniature coastal scenes to see if we could identify them by just touch. We successfully identified the different features of a beach, cliffs, rock pools and the ocean. We even got to make our own with sand and rocks. Take a look on our class page to see what we got up to!

Palm Class
This week Palm class have begun their independent writes based on our poetry work of the poem 'I Rise'. For our first independent write we are writing from the point of view of August Pullman, the main character in the story Wonder. We have been trying to create an emotive poem that shows the feelings of August throughout his life and his continuing resilience. I have been wowed by the language used and cannot wait for our next poem where the children get to choose their own time where they have shown resilience. I wonder if your child talk to you about some of the poetic techniques they have used it their poem?

Cedar Class
This week, Cedar class have been developing their geography skills by using OS maps to locate Yorkshire and our local village of Kirkby Malzeard. The children thoroughly enjoyed exploring our surrounding area by tracing the road links that connect us to nearby towns and cities. Why not ask your child to show you where Kirkby is on the OS map.

Class Collective Worship
Each week one of our Collective Worship sessions takes place in class with a focus on something in the news. Attached is a take home that you might like to think about and share with your child at home.
