Weekly Update Thursday 6th March 2025

06 Mar 2025

Our Vision

We believe that our children should have the aspiration and opportunity to ‘Live life in all its fullness’ and ‘Shine like stars in the sky’.

New this week…

British Science Week
British Science Week is entering its third decade in 2025, taking place on 7-16 March, and the theme to mark the start of this new era is ‘Change and adapt’!  As a federation, we are going to be watching either webinars:  Change Champions or Amazing Adaptations.  These webinars are interactive and should be a great learning experience for each Key Stage.

On the 10th March, the NFU will be kicking off our Science Week with Change Champions- an interactive, action packed session for Key Stage 1!  We will meet Farmers Lutfi and Ruby, their amazing family of change champions and their cheeky gang of chickens, goats and sheep!  The Change Champion family will show us all the ways they fight climate change on their farm and then we’ll be joining Tom the food-waste fighting chef in his kitchen to whip up a delicious, zero waste delight and learn how we can become change champions ourselves!

Next, we’re inviting Key Stage 2 to Amazing Adaptation Day on the 12th March!  During this time we will be looking at amazing adaptations when we’ll be learning how a range of exciting animals and crops have adapted to their environments. Have you ever met a Belted Galloway or one of only 17 zebus living in the UK? What about a poo powered tractor or a climate change fighting sheep?  We’ll be seeing them all, meeting the farmers who are adapting to the effects of extreme weather brought about by climate change and hearing from the scientists who are working with them to plan and innovate for the future.

We hope that the children really enjoy these opportunities and have fun celebrating British Science Week.

Inspirational Woman’ Essay Writing Competition - Optional home idea
To coincide with International Women’s Day, Harrogate Ladies College are excited to announce the launch of our annual ‘Inspirational Woman Essay Competition’, which aims to celebrate the success of women who have become role models in our children’s lives.

It is a great opportunity for young writers to hone their craft. The competition's focus on developing writing and reading comprehension skills directly supports the Key Stage 2 curriculum and lays strong foundations for future learning. It’s also a really creative project to do at home!

The competition is open to pupils in Year 3, 4 and 5 and finalists will be invited to a special luncheon at Harrogate Ladies’ College. Winners will also hear their entries read aloud by inspirational women!

Pupils in Year 3 & 4 must write a maximum of 500 words and Year 5 pupils have a 750-word limit. The winner in each age category will receive £50 of book vouchers and a further £50 in vouchers for their school.

Red Nose Day is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year and so to celebrate this and raise money for the charity, the school council have decided to invite everyone to come dressed in their best 80's outfit for a suggested donation of £1.  We will also be having a bit of an 80s dance party to celebrate during the day.

Each week one of our Collective Worship sessions takes place in class with a focus on something in the news.  Attached is a take home that you might like to think about and share with your child at home, there is no need to return this to school.  There is a new sheet each week.

Parent help - Postcards

As part of Geography and helping the children understand place and locational knowledge could I ask that if any parents or relatives are visiting places of interest or travelling to other destinations on day trips or on holidays that they pick up a postcard. They can either send to school by post or send the postcard with their child on return to school. We can then, together as a class, find, locate and investigate locations around the world. I am sure they will be eager to learn about who has been where and this will enthuse and encourage them to further their skills in using world maps, atlases and globes.

Watching and Browsing Online - Internet Matters
According to Ofcom, 90% of children are watching online videos and browsing the internet regularly. Children may love to stream videos and look up information, it’s a fun way to learn and relax after all but they must be guided. The e-space is filled with inappropriate content and dangerous material. It is important that parents and even teachers, are able to steer their pupils and youngsters, towards the right places when online. Internet Matters has published a guide dedicated to supporting adults in setting digital boundaries for children, so that they can make smart choices and build healthy online habits. In the Internet Matters guide you’ll find practical tips on managing content access, the use of safety controls, advice on setting boundaries and ways to educate children on how to stay secure online.
