Weekly Update Thursday 30th January 2025

30 Jan 2025

Our Vision

We believe that our children should have the aspiration and opportunity to ‘Live life in all its fullness’ and ‘Shine like stars in the sky’.

New this week…

Immersive Science workshop
On Monday 27th we welcomed Emma from Love Science into school to work with Acorn and Oak Classes, everyone had a fantastic time. On Monday Monday 3rd February, we will be welcoming Emma back to work with Years 3-6 to do our Sheep Tracking on Rocks, fossils and adaptations. They will discuss the rock cycle Emma will bring examples of the different rocks for the children to look at. This will lead them on to talk more about Sedimentary rocks and fossils. Then they will create sedimentary rock tubs - small clear tubs filled with different grain that mimic the different sediment needed to create a fossil with a small dinosaur placed in-between the layers. They will then finish off with some fizzing and make volcanos which is the very start of the rock cycle!  We hope they have a brilliant, hands on learning experience which will embed their learning from last year.

Celebration and Sharing Collective Worship
Our next sharing celebration for parents has been rearranged for Friday 21st March 2025 at 9am. All welcome. Coffee and cake to follow.
If your child has anything they would like to celebrate over the coming weeks and leading up to this time, please ensure these come into school for sharing in class. This will then automatically be added to the list for the sharing worship. This will help us manage the amount things to share on the day and plan ahead for this.

New members of staff
We have two new members of staff here at Kirkby Malzeard, Miss Sharpley and Miss Parkin, they are both part-time and are a welcome addition to our school.

Collection Changes
Please ensure that any collection amendments are communicated via the school office by 12 noon at the latest. Any changes will be confirmed by the office. After this point the office is unmanned and we cannot make any changes to the collections or bus list. If you have not had confirmation of any changes requested, please do not assume these have been seen by staff at school.

Young Voices
As Young Voices is fast approaching, please encourage your child to listen to some of the songs we are still learning at home.

All songs can be found on You tube here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6hkCrfwQMU&list=PLXU0D7ea-nJy2Ca3BleoQkGBzSq9v15S9

Also, the songs are available on apple music and Spotify, from the official young voices. Just search Young Voices 2025

Songs we still need to work on are:
Try Everything
Birdhouse in your soul
Oceania
Little blue

Please remind your child to listen to these at home to familiarise themselves with them so they can fully enjoy the Young Voices experience.

Thank you for your support.

Class Collective Worship
Each week one of our Collective Worship sessions takes place in class with a focus on something in the news.  Attached is a take home that you might like to think about and share with your child at home, there is no need to return this to school.  There is a new sheet each week.

Forest School Wednesday
This half term Acorn will have their forest school sessions EVERY Wednesday. Children need to come to school in their PE kits, school shoes, navy joggers, white PE top and navy sweatshirt. This is a comfortable and practical base for us to add layers too. Children will need to bring one warm waterproof coat, a hat, scarf, waterproof gloves and if you have them welly/warm socks and waterproof trousers. Please can these come to school in a named bag. All children need a pair of wellies in school, if they don't please can they bring a pair to keep at school; if your child came home in their boots can they be returned in the morning, thank you.  Children will come home in their forest school clothes.

Forest School Friday
To support our Golden Thread further, Helen will be running a morning forest school session for each class on a Friday morning based around confident communication. New dates are on the website and are as follows:

Friday 31st January – Acorn
Friday 28th February – Oak
Friday 7th March – Acorn
Friday 14th March – Palm
Friday 4th April - Cedar

Children should come in comfy, warm clothes suitable for forest school. They will need long trousers, water proofs and wellies. Please send uniform in a bag for the afternoon session.

Reminders…

Parking in Church Street.
Can we remind all parents dropping their children off at school to please be considerate when parking in and around the school, particularly in Church street. We have had further complaints from residents that their driveways have been completely blocked due to parked cars and that they have been delayed whilst trying to get to work.
Thank you

Class PE days
The days for PE this term for each class are as follows:
Acorn – Friday (please come into school in PE kit as last term)
Oak –  Friday
Palm - Friday
Cedar - Monday

Parent help - Postcards
As part of Geography and helping the children understand place and locational knowledge could I ask that if any parents or relatives are visiting places of interest or travelling to other destinations on day trips or on holidays that they pick up a postcard. They can either send to school by post or send the postcard with their child on return to school. We can then, together as a class, find, locate and investigate locations around the world. I am sure they will be eager to learn about who has been where and this will enthuse and encourage them to further their skills in using world maps, atlases and globes.

Safeguarding, Health and Wellbeing Updates…

How Safe is WhatsApp for Children - NSPCC
WhatsApp is one of the most popular instant messaging apps, used by over 2 billion people in 180 countries. It allows you to send and receive messages, as well as make voice and video calls. You can connect with people individually or join group chats where lots of people can contribute. All you need to set up a WhatsApp account is a phone number. However, children and young people can easily subvert the restrictions placed on its access. Although rated at 16+, all that is required is a phone number. All it takes is one child in a class to be on WhatsApp, and all the others will wish to join. This can lead to increased vulnerabilities for child users. The NSPCC has released its own analysis about the dangers of the app. If interested, please follow the link below:
