Weekly update week commencing Monday 5th June 2023
Good Afternoon,
Class Structure 2023
As we near the end of the academic year, our thoughts in school have started to turn to the academic year ahead. The senior leadership team have spent considerable time reflecting on class sizes and structures that best meet the ever-changing needs of our children.
Miss Bannon’s contract comes to end in July, and we have appointed a new teacher, Miss Laura Mackenzie, to the staff team for September 2023.
With this in mind, the class structure from September 2023 will be as follows:
Acorn Class – Mrs Pawson
Reception and Year One.
Oak Class – Miss Mackenzie
Year Two
Miss Mackenzie will be coming into school to meet her new class in the coming weeks. Miss Mackenzie currently teaches in Year 2 at Cathedral School in Ripon. We are very excited that she is joining the staff team and look forward to welcoming her to school.
Mrs Pawson will be the Phase Leader for EYFS and Key Stage 1.
Palm Class – Miss Oates
Year Three and Year Four
Cedar Class – Mr Anson (with Mrs Gains each Thursday)
Year Five and Six
Miss Oates will be the Phase Leader for Key Stage 2
In school the week after half term,
Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check (MTC)
After half term the Year 4 children will be completing their statutory multiplication tables check. Year 4 parents will have previously received information about this, if you have any further questions, please speak to Miss Oates or Miss Bannon. No specific preparation is required, but plenty practice on timestable rock stars will be beneficial.
Year 1 Phonics Screen Check (PSC)
After half term Year 1 children will be completing their statutory phonics screen check. Children work with their teacher to read a mix of real and ‘alien’ words. The check lasts for a few minutes and is something we have worked towards so there is no preparation required. If you have any further questions, please speak to Miss Oates of Mrs Pawson.
Parent Book Club
Thank you to everyone who joined us to talk about ‘The Book You Wish Your Parent’s had Read and Your Children Will Be Glad That You Have’. We had a great discussion and a giggle too.
Our next book is slightly different and if you would like to read along with us or join the group just let me know. We will be reading ‘Stolen Focus’ by Johann Harri. We are reading this over the Summer holiday and meeting in September. If you have any questions or would like to join, contact gpawson@kirkbymalzeard.n-yorks.sch.uk
Dynamo Cricket Festival
A selection of Year 6 will be participating in the final of the Dynamo Cricket Festival on Tuesday 6th June 2023. We will be contacting families directly about this in due course.

Sun safety
Finally we have some sunshine! We are delighted but it is important we keep the children safe during these sunny periods. Please ensure your child has the following on hot sunny days to keep them safe: sun hat/cap, water bottle and suncream applied before arriving at school. If you wish, you may also provide your child with suncream to top-up at school; this needs to be a named bottle and your child will need to apply it themselves (adults will supervise and support as necessary for each age-group). Please take extra care to ensure your suncream does not contain any nut ingredients or extracts - thank you.
