Home Learning - Spellings

Spelling Home Learning in Cedar Class

Each week in Cedar pupils learn a letter string/re-visit a spelling rule.  This week are investigating the 'ough' letter string.

Our spelling sessions in school involve lots of investigation - looking at patterns, sounds and finding out the origins of words (etymology).

Origins of words can be found in an etymology dictionary (a great investment) or alternatively children can search the 'origin' or 'etymology' of a word on the internet.

Each week  two pieces of spelling work will be published on the website for pupils to complete at home.  One activity focuses on a LSCWC (Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check)  strategy and the other is more investigative -  a list of words is provided for pupils to explore and dive deep into.  Some children extend their investigations - not just restricting themselves to the sheets provided; please encourage this, as independent investigation of spelling is the best way for pupils to improve their spelling skills, rather than a list of words learnt only for a test each week.

Three words from the Y3/4 and three from the Y5/6 lists are included on the spelling sheets - these words do need to be learned by heart.

Spelling tests will take place once a half term, which will test pupils on words linked to the rules investigated  throughout the half term spelling sessions.  Statutory words will be assessed through the writing in pupils' books, along with a half termly test of a random selection of these words.  Pupils are encouraged to revise these lists 'little and often' at home.

It would be fantastic to see evidence of the children's spelling investigation work - a photograph of pupils' work would be great, if this is possible.

I have also chatted to Cedar Class today about taking responsibility for their home learning, and how it can extend their learning in school, as well as prepare them for expectations at secondary school.  I have asked the children to speak to me directly if they are struggling with their home learning, as support can be put in place to help them with this at school if they are finding it difficult to complete it at home.

Thank you for your support with encouraging your child to take responsibility for their home learning.

Happy investigating, Cedar Class!
