Weekly update 13th January 2022

13 Jan 2022

Wow! What an exciting start to the new spring term, we have had in Cedar!

It has been fantastic to see the children back in the full swing of their learning, they have come back after Christmas with such enthusiasm and positivity; full of energy and excitement for the beginning of term.

We began the week with a reminder of our expectations and values, revisiting routines and exploring our 3B’s; we discussed how as Year 6’s we can help set a positive example to the rest of the school and be confident role models. The children have impressed all week in their attitude and maturity with regard to both the school vision and their responsibilities as Year 6 pupils.

Our PE got off to a very exciting start last Friday with fencing!  Chris from Sports Cool will be teaching small groups of children fencing over the forthcoming weeks and we are so excited about this!  Chris will also be teaching PE every Tuesday afternoon.  As a reminder, please ensure PE kits are in school every Monday morning and that they are returned to school following our Tuesday PE session, as the children will be sent home in their kits, thank you.

In guided reading we have been looking deeper into the character of Liam in ‘Cosmic’ and how we can use our reading skills to infer and make links within the text, in order to gain a more in depth understanding.

In English we have being busy finishing our ‘chase’ short stories making showing off our impressive writing skills with special focus on using ambitious vocabulary and carefully constructed relative clauses.

Maths has seen us start to tackle long division, I have been incredibly impressed with the amazing growth mind-set of the children and their determination to always keep thinking positively. The children have made huge steps in their understanding of long division, their progress has been outstanding.

On top of all this the children have completed some mock maths SATS paper’s as we begin to attempt to improve our exam technique and prepare for the SAT tests later this year.

We have also continued to add books to our ever increasing classroom library, and talk about the books we are currently reading both in school and at home; discussing our favourite books and stories as well as books we might like to add to our library in the future. Our golden thread this term is ‘life-long readers’ and we look forward to enjoying lots more discussion around the texts we read.

What a fantastic start to the new school term, with every Year 6 really shining like stars all week long!
