Weekly Update 17th January 2019

Mrs Wolfe - 17 Jan 2019

Well, what an amazing start to the week!  Young Voices was such an adventure!  We had a brilliant day at Sheffield Arena and it was certainly a day/night to remember.  The children behaved impeccably and were an absolute credit to the school.  What an experience it was getting to sing with 5,048 other children as part of the Young Voices choir, along with professional singers such as Tony Hadley (Spandau Ballet), Sharlene Hector (Basement Jaxx) and Beau Dermott (Britain’s Got Talent Golden Buzzer Act).  The stars of the show (according to Cedar class) were the Urban Strides dance crew, who blew us away with their incredible dancing.  Even Hugh Jackman made an appearance just before the Greatest Showman medley, sharing a recorded message to the Young Voices choir!  Amazing!  It was great to see so many friends and families of Kirkby at the event – thank you so much for supporting us.  Thank you to Mrs Harris, for teaching Cedar the songs in preparation for the show, Miss Oates, for accompanying us to the event and Mr Weld and art club for our wonderful Kirkby banner.

Those pupils who didn’t accompany us to the show completed some important and exciting eco-work back at school with Mrs Buggy, researching the use of single-use plastics and their impact on the world around us.  We are looking forward to these pupils presenting their findings to the ambassadors and the school.  Following this our ambassadors will begin implementing their actions to help make a change.

This week in maths we have continued our fraction work, comparing fractions through finding equivalents and common denominators.  Our Shackleton letters are complete and we are now authenticating them to look like real letters that have survived since the 1900s.  These will be kept in the library for all to enjoy.

We have spent our topic time preparing for our Ingleborough trip.  The children have completed their geography research and they are now compiling a leaflet/brochure for teachers persuading them to choose Ingleborough as their first choice of residential.  I am sure the Ingleborough staff will appreciate the free advertising!

We had great attendance at our Y6 revision club yesterday.  This will continue after our residential on the 30th January.  Thank you for encouraging your child to attend this after-school session; it is a great opportunity for them to revise and also improve revision skills for the future.

This week as part of our collective worship we have been thinking about Jesus as the water of life.

‘I am the water of life,’ John 4:13-14

We have looked at the teaching of Jesus and how his voice is portrayed in the Bible. We have also deepened our understanding of the work of water aid charities; we started our work with these charities in September as part of our harvest work.  Sofia and Matilda led our class worship this week and will lead tomorrow’s Friday wonder in celebration assembly. The wonder we are exploring is, ‘What can you do to bring life to others?’

Our Y6 captains have had a busy week, meeting with the school council to review playtimes.  They are currently organising a bake sale to be held on Friday 8th February to raise funds for the quiet area playground.  More details to follow.

We do hope you can join us on Tuesday 5th February 1:00-1:30pm for our Sign2Sing performance in school.  Please look out for an email and on the home page of the website for further details.
Please also check your inbox for my final arrangements for Ingleborough letter.  We are really looking forward to our residential next week.  Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any last-minute questions or queries.

Eco-school – please note: pupils now have permission to arrive at school in their eco-school clothes every Friday.  This should consist of warm and comfortable clothing, preferably tracksuit bottoms/leggings, t-shirts and sweatshirts.  If appropriate these clothes can double up for P.E., therefore limiting changing times and making the most of our P.E. and eco-school sessions.

Have a great weekend – looking forward to seeing you Monday morning at 8:45am in the school hall!
