Weekly update 14th November

Mrs Pawson and Miss Oates - 14 Nov 2019

What a fabulous week of adventures we have had in Acorn Class this week, we have been busy on our broomsticks and telling wonderful stories. We have invented our own great stories and acted them out.
This week we have all been readers, we can read lots of words and some super sentences, well done everyone! We have spent some time talking about all the different ways that we can read at home, reading to our pets and to brothers and sisters, looking at sounds we know on cereal packets, reading is everywhere! New words are always exciting, we have been collecting new vocabulary and using exciting language in class, I wonder what exciting words you can spot at home?
We are really trying to win the reading prize this week so make sure you read at home, it makes a huge difference. There are so many exciting things to read, keep up the good work everyone.

We have started phase three phonics this week, and learnt the sounds j,v,w and x. We have explored jelly and mysterious boxes and learnt to read and write so many new words using all of our phonemes. We will add the new phonics to our rings tomorrow. Please keep practising at home it is really important, if you would like any information or even a general chat about phonics please pop in and see us at any time, we love to talk about your child's learning.

In maths we have been looking at more than, less than and fewer, creating number stories and comparing our numbers in different ways. It is exciting to explore our reasoning and problem solving skills in different ways. Everyday we also practise our counting and number skills, it is so important to really understand what different numbers represent. Singing nursery rhymes, telling number stories, solving problems at home (for example when setting the table for dinner... how many more plates will we need and why?) are all great ways to practise. I wonder who can show off their fabulous maths skills at home this week?

We have been learning to use QR codes this week, finding out about artefacts from around the world that are in the British Museum. We have looked at masks and slippers as well as tombs, paintings and lots of interesting artefacts.

We were very proud of the children on Monday, they showed our visitors all of their amazing learning and chatted away, sharing lots of fabulous things. They were very impressed with our confidence to chat and share our learning. Well done everyone. Keep up the great work everyone.

A quick reminder about being independent at school; we are really encouraging all of the children to be independent, as we know that they can do it. Please encourage your child to bring their own bags and coats into class as well as self registering, it is such an important skill. A lot of thought goes into helping the children in Acorn class to develop their basic skills and the morning jobs are designed to really help build and develop these skills. It is great to come in with your child and to feel a part of their classroom. Why not ask to look at their photos on the wall, share a story or even chat to them about the day ahead? I wonder if everyone can be bringing their own bags into school and putting them away by themselves on Monday?

Mrs Taylor has sent every parent an email today with dates and information for the half term. Please have a look at this useful information.
