Weekly update 10th October

Mrs Pawson and Miss Oates - 10 Oct 2019

We have had a fabulous week in Acorn class, we have been excited about our new name. This half term in collective worship we have been thinking about special names and why a name is important, it is so nice to now have our own special name. We have been talking about our favourite autumn treasures today, I wonder if anyone can find any acorns when they are out and about this weekend?

In maths this this week we have been exploring and investigating the number five. We have counted, made, grouped, shared, and manipulated numbers to five. We are really interested in five as we will all be five very soon which has also led us to think about when our birthdays are! I wonder if you will spot the numeral 5 anywhere at home?

In our reading we have been reading and re-reading our favourite Hairy Maclary stories, the re reading helps us to start to know the story very well. We are starting to add our own sound effects and props to our stories. We love the stories about mischief and mayhem, what will the friends get up to next week? Our stories have some fabulous vocabulary in them we have been using words like ‘caterwaul’ and ‘concophony’ in our story telling. Using exciting vocabulary in our storytelling is a great challenge, what exciting words will you use in your storytelling at home?

We have a new whole school reading challenge... every child who reads at least five times a week will receive a point for their class, the class with the highest percentage of reading at home 5 times a week will receive a 'Reading Class of the Week' award in next Friday's assembly (18th October).  We are really excited about this and know that Acorns will do really well!  Please support your child by signing their yellow reading record every time you hear them read, please make sure these are in school everyday.

We have been great Betty Bees this week using our mark making, message writing and phonics together and really having a go and keeping trying. This is such a great adventure and we are both so excited to keep trying next week.

We have started to look at the sounds m/d/g/ and a mystery sound which we will explore tomorrow... look out for a mystery bag and think about the clues in the morning to discover our next sound!
We will put the new sound action and rhyme cards onto our phonics rings tomorrow.

Tomorrow we will be sending home a book pack with each child from the ‘Book Trust’ it includes a book to read, share and keep at home. We hope that you really enjoy sharing stories at home. We have heard that lots of friends and family are enjoying sharing our stories with us, I wonder if any of our pets or teddy bears like a story too. I wonder what adventures our wordless picture books will take us on this weekend? Remember to really challenge ourselves with fabulous vocabulary and exciting tales.

We thought that we might briefly explain our self registration table...
... each day we ask the children to find their photo and add it to our tens frames, this helps the children to recognise and play with numbers on the tens frames. For example, learning that if one tens frame is full, we know that ten people are here.
We also ask children to find their own name on a peg (recognising letter shapes and the pattern of their name) and to then strengthen our fingers by pinching the peg.
Doing these things independently is really important, helping your child by encouraging them or talking about what they are doing is fabulous.
