Weekly update 4th April

Mrs Pawson and Miss Oates - 04 Apr 2019

What an exciting week we have had, from building cairns to booking appointments at the hairdressers, we have been busy!

We have been challenging ourselves to write full sentences using our phonics this week and we have amazed everyone in school. Keep up the fantastic effort everyone.

In our maths work we have been exploring length, measuring with non standard units of measure (our hands, feet and our handspans for example). We have learnt to compare different lengths and to use all of our knowledge to tell some maths stories. Can you find anything to measure at home? We had some fantastic discussions about the length of our handspans and our ages and do you have to be taller to be older?

Why don’t you ask us about our feelings; we have been using loose parts to create facial expressions (which we can photograph and print independently). There have been some fantastic furrowed brows and cross eyebrows. It is really important that we think about and talk about our feelings and how others might be feeling too. We have learnt a new mindfulness exercise too and have been blowing our worries away through our imagined bubble blowers...
In forest schools we have really challenged ourselves with our use of tools, over the last few weeks we have learn to whittle, drill and now saw, it takes such a lot of determination. At the same time we need to work as a team safely. Our teachers are very proud of us. We have some grand plans of things we could make so watch this space.

We have been working on our sewing too, we always have a sewing table set up in class but this week some of us have chosen to sew with felt and have made puppets, soft toys, hearts... we can sew on a button if you need any mending!

On Tuesday we had a fantastic visit from Ben who led a ‘Skip 2 be fir’ workshop. After an exhausting warm-up, we had to use our growth mindsets to challenge ourselves to improve our skipping. Ben was very impressed with the effort the children put in!

In our collective worship this week the whole school has been thinking about confidence and ‘opening doors’, we have certainly been showing our teachers that our confidence in our learning is growing.

In our classroom today we have had a book wrapped in brown paper, all that we know about it is the title, we are trying to make predictions about the story and the pictures. We are working very hard to develop a wide range of reading skills; decoding, fluency, prediction, inference, storytelling. Practising all of these takes lots of time and we have to work really hard to continue to develop all of these skills to become confident readers  and writers. We have heard that some of us are reading to our pets and even our teddies, who we happen to know love a story!

In the news this week there has been some interesting reports about early years setting that have removed the toys from their environment, this is something that we have been embracing for a while, we use loose parts, found objects and made things alongside real objects for the children to explore and use in their play. The learning benefits are fantastic! If you have any questions or would like to know more please come and ask us.

Finally, we are looking forward to our Easter celebrations next week, from decorated egg competitions, egg squares (see the Friends information) and our Easter service on Monday (school hall at 3pm - everyone welcome). I wonder what exciting things we will find in our classroom next week?
