Weekly Update 7th March 2019

Miss Oates and Mrs Pawson - 07 Mar 2019

Wow, that was an amazing half term break and we are loving the stories of adventures in the sunshine! We are back to school refreshed and excited to develop our learning adventures. It was pointed out to us that we are half way through the academic year already. This doesn’t surprise us as we are so proud of how the children are growing and changing. We have started the half term with pancakes stories, pancake play dough and actual pancakes...lots of us have tried some new flavours and they were delicious. The children were also very responsible with their ‘healthy choice’ which was hard with the sweet temptations. They have read recipes, whisked, cooked, flipped, tasted and raced their pancakes .

We are beginning our work on Fairtrade, working towards our cafe next week (Thursday 14th 3pm). Please watch out for our posters (coming soon) and come and see us for a cake and a drink. This work really helps us to think about the wider world in which we live in.

Next week we we would like to invite parents to come to a workshop to share with you our EExAT journey. We are really excited to share the information with you. This will be held on Tuesday 12th March at 5:15pm in the classroom.

We we are taking part in a national potato growing completion. Our spuds are chitting and in two weeks time we take our first set of photos and plant the spuds. We have four varieties and lots of seed pototoes. We will keep you posted on our progress.

This is week we have started to develop some new forest school skills. I hope you all enjoyed seeing our fantastic medals with holes that we drilled ourselves! Puddle suits, kindly funded by the School House Fund have been purchased which means we will all be able to learn outside without getting wet or chilly. A huge thank you to our local community for these they are a great resource for our EYFS class to have in school.

We are currently busy planning our next trip (fingers crossed for 21st March) that has been inspired by the children. It is still top secret, but we can tell you that it will be outdoors, wild, fun, involve food and camp fires...

We are beginning to look at some phase four phonics next week. Phase 4 phonics focuses on using and applying everything we already know in greater depth as well as learning about different blends. We will let you know which ones we learning each week, there are not any Jolly Phonics actions or rhymes. This week we have been reviewing our phonics work, we are really proud of the hard work and achievement we have all made.

We read with the children everyday in lots of different ways, a shared story, planning a story map, story stone, reading instructions or a poem and whole class stories. Sharing language  and reading are really important and we spend a lot of time on this during Reception. Thank you for your continued support at home, it makes such a difference. Getting ‘other people’ to read with and to our children really helps, from family friends, siblings to Grans and Grandads, everything is important. It doesn’t have to be a book...

We are continuing to practise lots of key skills everyday through play and short adult led sessions. We will be looking at lots of different things this half term, measures, sharing, stories, feelings, writing messages, captions, using different tools and equipment... the list is endless. Our learning is child led, different everyday, exciting and always very busy!

Our learning reviews for the Spring term are  Tuesday 19th and Tuesday 26th March 3:40pm - 5:40pm. You should have received an email earlier this evening about this. If you know you need an appointment at a specific time then please make sure you book in via the website as soon as possible. You need to log-in to your website account to book a slot. Please bring your child with you to these learning reviews as they are the most important person in their learning journey...we know some children are really looking forward to these meetings already!

Finally,  we would just like to say how fabulous the children were today. Their costumes were great and we have loved sharing all of their stories with them,we have had frogs on logs, MacBook loving heroines, rabbits, caterpillars and fire breathing book loving dragons! Thank you for all of your time and effort. After a morning exploring ‘The Colour Monster’ we spent the afternoon really enjoying lots of great activities organised by our reading ambassadors, it has been great!
