Weekly Update - 31st January 2019

Miss Oates and Mrs Pawson - 31 Jan 2019

We are so proud of the children today. They welcomed our visitor into school with amazing warmth, spoke confidently and showed her so many exciting ideas and some of our fantastic learning, from how to light a fire to how we can do special things to help others. Our children are a great inspiration - come and share some of their ideas with them in class, we have ‘a light of the world’ bowl that we have put our ideas in this afternoon.

We are really excited about our outdoor bakery/cafe, with cake, jelly and many delights. The children have made signs and menus along with great mud recipes. Well done everyone. We are also very busy feeding and watching the birds around school. We have made a bird watching spot in our outdoor classroom as well as observing them on the field and in the wildlife area. We were very excited to spot two robins this morning and we listened very carefully to a woodpecker. We are taking part in the RSPB bird watch, have a look on their website to take part at home and share some of their great resources.

Thank you for your patience with muddy gloves and coats, we are sure that you will agree a mucky child is a happy child, which is certainly the case in our class. We do have aprons to wear which the children are encouraged to put on, sometimes they do hinder our explorations, as wearing lots of layers often does. Our learning experiences are so special and a very valuable part of learning, both for our gross motor skills and our personal development. Working outside in all conditions helps children to appreciate and value everyday and to build resilience rather than waiting for a ‘good day’ that relies on dry, warm weather. Making the absolute most of our precious childhood is so important!

Next week we will be investigating Chinese New Year and sharing our learning with Tiger Class from West Tanfield school on Friday. We have lots of great things in mind and we are sure that the children will think of lots of great things to explore for themselves too.
We have been busy exploring some trigraphs (3 letters making one sound) in phonics this week and we will add them to our key rings tomorrow. We are using our letter sounds to write phonetically at every single opportunity.

We have also begun investigating ‘teen’ numbers, we need to do lots of work on these to get a firm mental picture and understanding of these numbers. We talk about place value in terms of 10’s and 1’s so 13 is 1 whole 10 and 3 1’s. We use lots (!) of hands on resources to make the numbers and experiment with them. It is a very exciting area of our learning!

Finally we would just like to remind everyone that we love to talk about the children and the great things they do at home and at school, please keep sharing your child’s learning with us and if you have anything you would like to ask always pop in and see us both.

This week as part of our collective worship we have been thinking about Jesus as the water of life:

‘I am the light of the world’ John 8:12

Our Friday wonder is ‘How can you shine out as a light into the world?’

Useful reminders:
  • Candle mass church service, Monday 4th February, 2:30pm, St Andrew’s Church - all welcome
  • Whole school ‘Sign2Sing’ performance, Tuesday 5th February, 1:00-1:30pm - all welcome (donations appreciated, raising money for Sign Health charity)
